The official civic portal of The Independent City of Temporis

Founded Day 1 of Year 0 and governed under charter with the New Church of Jonas Falx, Temporis remains self-administered on the continent of Hagia.

“Temporis belongs to those who build it.”

About the City

The Independent City of Temporis governs itself under charter while remaining in fellowship with the New Church of Jonas Falx. Most residents are Seraphs. The city calls on the Forlorn Hope, its knightly order, for defense in matters both routine and dire.

Temporis has declared its independence from the Conclave of Hagia, a political union of several other settlements on the continent. The city seeks neither to rule its neighbors nor to be ruled by them, and remains open to trade, diplomacy, and alliances built on mutual respect between equals.

What We Are

The Forlorn Hope are the knights of Temporis. Not lords, not a bloodline, and not a reward for birth. We are a duty that anyone can be called to and no one is owed.

Our name comes from the knights who stood upon the surface of a dying world while humanity sheltered beneath it. They held the line because someone had to.

Our Three Duties

Protect

Protect the weak and stand between danger and those who would suffer from it.

Preserve

Preserve knowledge, records, techniques, names, and lives from needless loss.

Endure

Remain steady when fear, danger, or uncertainty would make standing difficult.

Service in the Hope

The Hope serves across the walls and roads of Temporis. Squires and Knights may be assigned to gates, patrols, escorts, emergency response, Archive protection, or expeditions. There is no lesser posting: a Squire at a gate can do more good than a Knight who never draws a blade.

The order is organized into Squires, Knights, and Captains, each divided into three ranks. Rank measures trust and responsibility, not merely fighting ability.

Department of the Forlorn Hope

The Knightly Order of Temporis, including its purpose, hierarchy, duties, teachings, and the manual carried by those who enter its service.

A Manual for Squires

Issued by order of the New Church of Jonas Falx, Independent City of Temporis.

You are not yet a Knight. You may never be one. There is no shame in that. A wall needs stones and watchmen, not only champions.

Carry this manual. Read it. Mark it. Return to it when the answer is not obvious.

I. What We Are

The Forlorn Hope are the knights of Temporis. Not lords, not a bloodline, and not a reward for birth. We are a duty that anyone can be called to and no one is owed.

We are named for those who came before: the knights who stood on the surface of a dying world while what remained of humanity sheltered beneath it. They held the line when holding it made no sense. We do not worship them. We study what they did right, what they did wrong, and what was lost.

Protect the Weak

Stand between danger and those who would otherwise suffer from it.

Be the Wall

Hold the line when there is still something worth defending.

Preserve Knowledge

Protect records, techniques, names, and knowledge from needless loss.

The scope of the Hope is Temporis, including its people, archives, walls, roads, and future. We are not saviors of the world. Aid beyond the walls may be freely given, but it is not owed.

II. The Hierarchy

There are three stations: Squire, Knight, and Captain. Each contains First, Second, and Third Rank. These are not nine different kinds of soldier. Rank measures trust.

“Rank is not a reward. It is a measure of what we are willing to place in your hands.”
Strength alone does not determine advancement. Judgment, loyalty, conduct, experience, and the trust earned through service matter.

The Post
Newly proven. Gates, walls, patrols, escorts, and lesser threats. Not expected to seek battle.Proven. Better equipment; may fight when needed, though higher-ranked Squires and Knights ordinarily take the line first.Trusted in danger. Among the first Squires expected to answer when fighters are called.

Captain
The Choice
Entrusted with command.Proven judgment through command and experience. The highest standing. Only one Third Rank Captain exists; when Captains must yield to a single voice, that voice decides.
Squire · First Rank

The Post

You are newly proven. Show that you can be trusted with ordinary things: gates, walls, patrols, escorts, and lesser threats.

Steadiness before heroics.
Squire · Second Rank

The Proven

You have proven yourself. Better equipment follows, and you may fight when needed.

Proven service brings greater responsibility.
Squire · Third Rank

The Trusted

You remain a Squire, but danger no longer finds you untested. You are among the first Squires expected to answer when fighters are called.

Trust under danger.
Knight · First Rank

The Blade

You have been entrusted with the blade. Knighthood requires more than fighting skill; you must know which fights are worth having and which are better avoided.

Skill at arms is necessary, but not sufficient.
Knight · Second Rank

The Armor

You have established yourself in the trust of Knighthood and are issued the armor of the Forlorn Hope.

Dependable service and judgment.
Knight · Third Rank

The Trusted Blade

You stand among the most trusted Knights. Experience and judgment determine what you are asked to carry.

Trust with what cannot be replaced.
Captain · First Rank

The Command

You are entrusted with command. Others may now be placed in your hands, and your decisions carry their consequences.

Command begins with responsibility.
Captain · Second Rank

The Judgment

You have proven your judgment through command, demonstrating that you can make difficult choices without surrendering to pride or panic.

Decide for others without forgetting them.
Captain · Third Rank

The Voice

The highest standing in the order. Only one Third Rank Captain exists. When Captains must yield to a single voice, that voice decides.

One voice when one decision is required.

III. On Death, and Why We Do Not Romanticize It

Seraph Return is not a promise. Falling can be survivable and still be painful, costly, and frightening for those left behind. Some true humans have one death, certain.

“Did you fall because you had to? Or because falling felt noble?”

There is no glory in an avoidable fall. Seek people who will still be standing tomorrow, not legends made by dying today.

IV. Duties You Will Be Asked to Carry

Wall and Gate: Maintain the city's defenses and control entry.

Patrol: Watch roads, walls, wards, and areas where danger may emerge.

Escort: Protect people, shipments, and other vulnerable movements.

Archive Detail: Guard restricted records and the people responsible for preserving them.

Emergency Response: Answer urgent threats and crises where the city needs trained hands.

Expedition Support: Accompany expeditions where a decision may determine the survival of a person or the preservation of irreplaceable knowledge.

There is no lesser posting. A Squire at a gate can do more good than a Knight who never draws a blade.

V. The Oath

“I will guard the living. I will preserve the dead. I will defend what is known. I will seek what is not. I will not surrender while there remains something worth saving.”

VI. The Creed

PROTECT. PRESERVE. ENDURE.

“While one stands, hope remains.”

Carry this book. Read it when the answer isn't obvious. It usually won't be. That is why we still need someone standing at the wall to work it out. Welcome to the Forlorn Hope, Squire.
